NSF SBIR Solicitation Released - Due 12/3/09 E-mail

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released their latest solicitation for the SBIR program, with a proposal due date of 12/3/09.

Phase I SBIRs funded by NSF will have project periods of 6 months and budgets of up to $150,000.  Companies can submit a maximum of two proposals in response to this solicitation, and a PI can only be associated with one proposal.  The general topic areas that the NSF are interested in for this round include:

NSF encourages offerers to contact the relevant program officer to determine how responsive the proposed concept is to the needs of NSF.  While many agencies do this informally via a phone call or email, NSF has the following request in their solicitation:

"A company considering a proposal submission is encouraged to communicate (via email) with the cognizant program officer to help gauge the responsiveness to the solicitation. When contacting the cognizant program officer, please provide a brief 1-2 page executive summary with background on the: 1) company/team including experience with previous SBIR awards, 2) market opportunity, 3) technology/innovation and 4) competition. You may contact the program officer via email at any time before the submission deadline. Note, however, that communication with the program officer will become increasingly difficult as the deadline nears."

So, if you're planning to respond to this solicitation, get started early by formulating your ideas and contacting the program officer ASAP!  For more information on the NSF solicitation, visit the NSF solicitation web site.
